The Wrekin is a hill standing 1300 feet above sea level, the most northerly outpost of the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is Shropshire's most iconic natural landmark, and no trip to the county is truly complete without taking a walk to the top to survey the scene. Iron Age warriors once lived here, medieval nobles hunted here, and all manner of pilgrims, preachers and poets have been heading here ever since. Today, The Wrekin welcomes walkers and cyclists from across the Midlands and further afield, who come to enjoy its vast and ancient woodland, its fantastic views and the maze of country lanes that unravel around its base. What's more, the hill itself is just the start...
The market town of Wellington sits at the foot of The Wrekin, its southern suburbs beginning where the forest ends. It's an unpretentious sort of place, but unlike many market towns it still boasts a thriving market at its core. Our butchers sell locally-reared meat, our grocers grow their own, and our best pubs & restaurants put all this produce to good use every day of the week. The National Trust property Sunnycroft will whisk you back to provincial Victorian gentility, and our popular walking and cycling trails will help you unearth more about the area's history, along with its natural landscape. Depending on when you turn up, you can aloso look forward to a host of arts, heritage and sporting events, from the Great Wrekin Barrel Race in June to the Literary Festival in October.
Of course, if you decide this is all too much to fit into a day, you'll find plenty of hotels and guesthouses in and around the town where you can relax and unwind in comfort.
